Verzuz Battle With Patti Labelle & Gladys Knight

Soul legends Patti Labelle & Gladys Knight took part in the “auntie edition” of Verzuz this evening (Sunday, September 13th). After spending the first 30 minutes or so catching up about family, the importance of voting, and their famous culinary skills (LaBelle has a line of desserts and Knight is the former owner of a chicken and waffles franchise which bore her name), the legends traded hits from their combined 150 years of performance experience.

The duo went deep into their bevy of hits, ranging from Knight’s hit “Midnight Train to Georgia” and her James Bond movie theme “Licence to Kill” to LaBelle’s version of “Over the Rainbow” and “If You Asked Me To” — the latter of which was further popularized by a Céline Dion remake.

Live from the stage of The Fillmore in Philadelphia, the two superstars attracted a cast of celebrity onlookers that included  Michelle Obama, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Kerry Washington, Oprah Winfrey, Missy Elliot, Jill Scott, Octavia Spencer, Questlove, Lena Waithe, Alicia Keys, Whoopi Goldberg and last week’s #Verzuz co-star Brandy chimed in, along with over 3.2 Million viewers across Instagram and Apple Music.

The starlets wrapped up the evening with a surprise appearance by their contemporary and friend, singer Dionne Warwick.
