Music for Love…Is a Song in the Key of Life (by Justin O. Cooper)

Forty-six years ago, Stevie Wonder released his classic album Songs in the Key of Life, a body of work that would influence generations that would follow artistically and philanthropically, to do good and add value in a world “in need of love.” Stevie’s artistic masterpiece in the 104:29 runtime of his eighteenth studio album has influenced the
likes of Elton John, Michael Jackson, George Michael, to Mary J. Blige, and a litany of others in the decades that have followed.

For a motley crew of friends, it all started with a funny email to celebrate a 50th birthday, and in the 12 weeks that followed, Music for Love was born. Initially, the concept was improvised projects and live events with fundraising supporting a foundation that managed seven African schools. The following year, with a clear sense of its direction and purpose, Music for Love produced its first concert in Prato, Italy, on May 13, 2016.

In the six years since its inception, the music-centric non-profit has hosted an array of benefit and relief concerts from Greensboro, North Carolina, to Italy. The motivation behind Music for Love’s inception, led by Franco Nannucci, President and Founder, was his dislike for how many non-profit organizations were managed, how they utilized their funding, and their lack of transparency.

“Our vision is simple, to manifest unity through music. At Music for Love, our mission is to produce music concerts and albums, tools that allow us to promote our fundraising campaigns in support of children’s education and healthcare in Senegal, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Italy, the United States, and Jamaica,” says Nannucci.

Nannuci and his creative partner, Sonny King, Artistic Director & Head of A&R for the Music for Love record label, deliver on his mission of producing musical content that inspires and supports Music for Love’s humanitarian efforts. King is an award-winning music producer, songwriter, and engineer. His work has appeared in national ad campaigns for the NBA and the Long John Silver’s restaurant chain. King also composed music for several hit TV shows – “Mary Mary” (We TV), “Are you the One” (MTV), “WWE Total Divas” (E! TV), “Ball in the Family” (Facebook exclusive),” Huang’s World” (Viceland), “Basketball Wives” (VH1), and “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” (Hulu).

“I have been blessed to work with some great musicians, artists, and producers in my career, especially with Music for Love. While putting together the Music for Love, Vol. 1 compilation, we received the blessing of Rohan Marley and the Marley Family. I had the chance to remix one of Damian Marley’s hit songs, “Speak Life,” along with legendary bassist Stefano De Donato from the famous Italian funk band Dirotta Su Cuba,” says King.

Available on Spotify and other streaming platforms, Music for Love, Vol. 1 also features a solo jazz performance from world-renowned Trumpet player Fabrizio Bosso on “Dreaming Miles,” a track the label received the blessing from Miles Davis’ family. Additionally, an array
of features and artists under the Music For Love banner round out the project – Fabrizio Bosso, Pablo Nannucci, Sabina Sciubba, Kayo Bracey, Marilena Catapano, Stefano Ferraro, Simona Bencini, Anastasia Boldyreva, Hugo Gerreira, Cecy Santana, Maurizio Lampugnani,
and Ismaila Mbaye.

Extending its reach and visibility to further promote its mission and vision, Music for Love has partnered with the Ovation Agency.

“Music 4 Love fits into the brand positioning of the Ovation Agency where we’re always looking to “do good, with good music,” says Thornell Jones, co-managing partner for Ovation.

“It’s the ethos we forged during our time with Hidden Beach in the early 2000s. I love all things Africa, and my business partner, Allison Perkins-Thomas, is seasoned in both music and not-for-profits, so we were beyond blessed that the Music for Love, Vol. 1 project was
presented to us in the summer of 2021. Franco is a disrupter. Doing things his own way using music in service of humanity. Across all perceived barriers, people get it and get him. I get emotional thinking about it sometimes,” adds Jones.

Music for Love is committed to fulfilling Stevie Wonder’s call to action that “Love’s in Need of Love Today” through its philanthropic efforts.
