The Verzuz battle between R&B legends John Legend and Alicia Keys was a celebration of modern soul music spanning two decades.
The duo opened their Juneteenth battle with a dueling piano duet version of Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song” and proceeded to roll into their massive catalog of hits, sparking a nearly two and a half-hour exhibition. Plenty of hijinks ensued including John’s remarkable two-step and Alicia re-enacting her famous “U Don’t Know My Name” phone call. The duo also premiered new songs with Alicia playing “Perfect Way To Die” and John debuting “Never Break.”
The battle ended with an acknowledgment of the social injustice occurring in the world with Legend performing his Oscar-winning civil rights anthem “Glory.”
